On being neighbourly
We recently moved to a new apartment. It called for cake for the neighbours. It's something I always hold on to. I like knowing my neighbours, even in the busiest of cities. Sharing cake is the easiest way to do it. It breaks down all barriers. (It also reminds me of an odd combination of Carson McCullers and Anne of Green Gables).
Everyone (me) loves orange cake. This recipe is made with fine golden cornmeal and ground earthy almonds.
Once completely cooled, I like to serve it with cream mixed with orange zest and the rest of the vanilla pod or fresh yoghurt and a swirl of honey.
Or wrap in baking paper parchment and twine and give a slice to the neighbours. Because, you know, it's neighbourly.

Lucky neighbours - your beautiful wrapping of cake, reminds me of the book shop in Oamaru in the historic precinct where they hand-wrap all the books and add up your purchases with a pencil on paper.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen cake wrapped in string before - it's worth a poem I think Elizabeth... or perhaps it is already a poem, starting at Mix gently down to the final lovely line 'Because you know, it's neighbourly'.
I think you're right, Maggie - a poem could come of this :) Gosh, that sounds like a wonderful (independent?) book shop! I would love to have my books hand-wrapped upon purchase. Are they wrapped in brown paper, I wonder?
DeleteSounds yummy Elizabeth, Orange cake is one of my favourites too. Hope the neighbours enjoyed it! Love the wrapping paper too and the twine!
ReplyDeleteThank-you for the kind words about the orangey goodness, Helen :) Our neighbours loved the cake and I have also become firm friends with their tabby cat!
